A ten-minute evening wind-down is a short, fixed routine that marks the end of the working day: laptop closed, lamp on, then ten quiet minutes with a cupping massager on your shoulders and upper back. The point is not the device. It is giving yourself a clear line between work and the rest of the night.
Below is the exact routine, minute by minute, plus a few tweaks for days when you are short on time.
Why ten minutes
If you work at a desk, or at the kitchen table, work tends to end by drifting. You close one tab, open the fridge, check one more email on the couch. There is never a moment where the day actually stops.
Ten minutes is short enough that you will do it on a Tuesday, and long enough to feel like something happened. It also matches the way a smart cupping massager is used. You do not need an hour. One area, a gentle setting and a bit of patience is plenty.
What you need
- A cupping massager, charged (USB-C, cordless)
- A body oil or a plain moisturiser
- A lamp, not the overhead light
- A chair with a back, or a couch corner
- A towel, if you are using oil
Wear a loose top you can pull off one shoulder, or a singlet. Skip the shirt with the tight collar.
The routine, minute by minute
- Minute 0. Close the laptop. Fully shut, not just locked. Put it somewhere you cannot see it from the couch. Phone face down.
- Minute 1. Lamp on, big light off. This does more than you would think. The room tells your brain what comes next.
- Minute 2. Set up. Twist on the large cup. Turn the warmth to its lowest setting and let the soft red glow come on. Suction on level 1 or 2.
- Minute 3. Upper shoulder. Place the cup flat on the top of one shoulder, where it sits easily and you can reach without twisting. Use rhythmic cupping and just rest it there for a minute.
- Minute 4. Stay put. Breathe out slowly a couple of times. Resist checking the time.
- Minute 5. Press release, switch sides. Always press the release button before you lift the device. Repeat on the other shoulder.
- Minute 6. Add oil. Put a little oil on the upper back and swap to the textured gliding cup. Switch to continuous gliding.
- Minutes 7 to 9. Glide. Slow, long strokes across the shoulders and down the upper back. Keep it moving. If it grips too much, lower the suction or add oil. Warmth stays on low.
- Minute 10. Finish. Press release, lift off, wipe the cup with a dry cloth. Sit for 30 seconds before you stand. Then do something that is not work.
That last step matters more than it looks. The routine only works as a line in the day if what comes after is clearly different. Cook, put music on, go for a walk, or just sit.

The routine itself is simple. The hard part is doing it on the nights you least feel like it. A few things that help.
Keep the gear where you will use it
If it lives in a cupboard in the spare room, it will not get used. Leave it in the basket next to the couch, with the oil and a towel. The cordless design means no wrestling with a power cord.
Use the remote
Once you have the cup in place, the remote lets you change level without twisting around. It is a small thing, and it is what makes the shoulders workable by yourself.
Let the auto shut-off do the timing
The device switches off after 20 minutes. You will not need that on a ten-minute routine, but it means you can put it down on a night you fall asleep in the chair and nothing keeps running.
Same time, same lamp
Routines stick when they are tied to a trigger. Shutting the laptop is the trigger. Do not wait until you "feel like it".
Tweaks for different evenings
| Evening | What to change |
|---|---|
| Only five minutes | Skip the gliding. Do one minute on each shoulder, then stop. |
| Long day, want more | Stay with the gliding for three extra minutes. Keep suction low. |
| Cold night | Turn the warmth up one step and put a blanket over your lap. |
| Shared household | Do it in the bedroom with the door shut. A quiet room helps. |
| Same spot as yesterday | Give it a day or two before cupping the same spot again. |
What to expect on your skin
Light pink or reddish round marks can appear where the cup sat. They are a normal skin response to suction and usually fade on their own within a few days. Lower the suction and keep the cup moving to keep them lighter. There is more in our guide to cupping marks.
New to all this? Start with how to use a cupping massager for the first session, then come back to this routine.
Where not to use it
Keep it off the face, the front of the neck, near the heart, broken or irritated skin, moles, varicose veins and sunburn. It is not for children. If you are pregnant, have a pacemaker or another implanted device, have a health condition or take blood thinners, check with your GP before using a cupping massager.
Common questions
Can I use a cupping massager every night?
Short sessions on different areas, yes. The manual suggests leaving the same spot for a day or two before cupping it again, so rotate between shoulders, upper back and the backs of the arms.
How long should an evening session be?
Ten minutes is a good fit. Start with 30 to 60 seconds on one area, then see how it feels.
Do I need oil?
For gliding mode, yes. Use a body oil or well-moisturised skin and keep the cup moving. For rhythmic cupping you can go without.
Can I do this right after a shower?
Wait about 45 minutes after using it before you shower, so plan the order of your evening. Many people shower first, then do the routine, then get into pyjamas.
