Light pink or reddish round marks can appear where a cupping massager sat on your skin. They are a normal skin response to suction, and they usually fade on their own within a few days, sometimes longer on sensitive skin. Lower suction and a cup that keeps moving tend to give lighter marks.
If you have ever seen a photo of round marks on someone's back and wondered what was going on, this is the plain version.
What the marks look like
Most are round, about the size of the cup rim, and sit somewhere between pale pink and a deeper rose. Where the cup glided instead of sitting still, you get streaks or a flushed patch instead of a neat circle.
They do not look the same on everyone. Skin tone, how long the cup stayed, the suction level and how often you use it all change the result. Lighter skin shows marks more clearly. On deeper skin tones they can be harder to see.
Why they appear
Suction pulls gently at the skin surface, and the skin shows that as a mark. It is the same kind of thing as the faint outline a tight sock leaves, just rounder. We will not go further than that, because this is a massager for relaxation and not a device with claims to make.
What matters in practice is that marks are a visible sign of how strong and how long you cupped, which is useful feedback.
How to keep them lighter
- Start low. Level 1 or 2 for your first few sessions.
- Keep time short. Try 30 to 60 seconds on a new spot, then decide.
- Use gliding mode. Steady suction, a little oil and a cup that keeps moving usually leaves a softer flush than leaving the cup in place.
- Space it out. Give the same spot a day or two before cupping it again.
Our first-session guide has a table of starting levels by area.

Shop the RHYTIA massagerHow long they last
Usually a few days. Sensitive skin can hold them for longer. If you plan to wear something backless or have an event coming up, skip the session for a day or two before, or stick to areas that clothes cover.
Nothing needs to be done to them. Do not scrub, do not apply cold packs or creams that promise to remove them, and do not cup over the top of a mark that is still visible.
When to stop and leave it alone
- The skin looks broken, blistered or very irritated.
- Marks are much darker than you expected, or stay far longer than a week.
- The area feels hot, tender to touch or otherwise odd.
In any of these cases stop using the device on that spot. If you are worried, check with your GP. Our safety guide lists where not to use it at all.
Marks and how you use the device
| What you do | What you tend to see |
|---|---|
| Low level, 30 to 60 seconds, rhythmic | Faint pink circle or none at all |
| Medium level, a few minutes in one spot | Clearer round mark |
| Gliding with oil, cup moving | Soft, even flush |
| High level, long time, same spot daily | Stronger marks that take longer to fade |

Planning around marks
A few practical things make life easier if you would prefer not to see marks.
- Choose areas clothes cover, like the upper back or thighs, for your first sessions.
- Keep a note on your phone of the level and time you used, so you can repeat what you liked.
- Use the small cup for narrower spots. A cup that is too big for the area pulls more skin in than you need.
- Try gliding mode with oil before a day when you will be in a swimsuit or singlet.
Marks you may see in photos online
Photos of dark, strong marks usually come from long sessions at high suction, often with traditional cups. A smart device lets you pick much gentler settings. You do not need to match what you see online. A lighter session is a perfectly good session.
Plenty of people use their massager and rarely see more than a faint pink circle that is gone by the next morning.
Skin care afterwards
Keep it boring. Wipe off any oil, wear something soft and let your skin be. A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser is fine if your skin feels dry. Wait about 45 minutes before a shower, as the manual suggests.
If you spot a mark and want to know whether you can cup that area again, the answer is to wait until it has faded and give it a day or two more.
Common questions
Are cupping marks normal?
Yes. Light pink or reddish round marks are a normal skin response to suction and usually fade on their own.
How long do cupping marks last?
Usually a few days. Sensitive skin can take longer.
Can I use a cupping massager without getting marks?
Often, yes. Low levels, short times and gliding mode keep marks light, and some sessions leave none at all.
Do the marks mean I did something wrong?
No. They mean the suction was noticeable. If you prefer not to see them, go lower next time.
